Now, someone better informed may correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the 18 quintillion (256^8, 2^64) number actually counts all the planets in all the galaxies in no man's sky, not the planets per galaxy. If that's the case, then the number of planets in each galaxy would be "only" 72,057,594,037,927,936 (256^8/256).. Instead, for the map it's roughly possible to know the nr. of planets by guessing the nr. of galactic regions and how many stars are within them. I guess then that the visible galaxy has around only 2-2.5 million stars, which doesnt' mean so many planets (maximum 15 million). I've already pasted 800K lightyears in the 10th galaxy looking for.

This is a beginner guide for the Galaxy map in No Man's Sky. This actually hasn't changed much at all but I haven't seen anyone go over the basics of the map.. The Galactic Map is a feature in No Man's Sky universe where the player can explore and discover star systems across the vast universe. It is available when the player is in space in their starship or by using the Freighter Warp Map on the freighter's bridge. Visited systems are interconnected with faint grey lines and are marked with a white.
